A creative design studio based in South Shields has invested in new equipment to expand its capabilities and explore new markets.
Cabinet of Curiosity Studio, which specializes in public art commissions for the arts and heritage sector, worked with the Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing (SAM) project team to engage with technical experts and upgrade its machinery to cutting.
Upgrades will open new opportunities and support batch production.
The studio was created in 2010 by designer Caroline Collinge and architect Edmond Salter, after being selected as finalists for a competition from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
Since then, the studio has worked with museums such as the V&A, arts and heritage organizations such as the Thames Festival Trust, as well as local authorities and universities across the UK.
Collinge said: “We’ve worked on some fantastic projects over the years, helping our clients engage with wider audiences through the arts and design. All elements of design and manufacturing are made in our studio, using laser cutting manufacturing techniques and CAD software.
“Before the pandemic I attended a business event in Durham to find out what support we could get, that’s how I found out about the SAM project. We wanted to make sure Cabinet of Curiosity Studio had a length of time. advance, and the digital course and funding has allowed us to invest in equipment to design more detailed designs, use a wider range of materials and recycled materials, as well as explore new revenue streams and batch production.”
The SAM project is a £10.9 million collaboration between the European Regional Development Fund, the University of Sunderland and the Northern Powerhouse Initiative and Industry.
It aims to help manufacturing SMEs in the North East Local Business Partnership region improve their products or processes using new technologies.
